Una vida en el laboratorio: “La bioquímica es un continuo aprendizaje”
Marta Sbodio es bioquímica y directora técnica del laboratorio de la Clínica Regional del Este. En el Día del Bioquímico analiza su profesión y los cambios que llegaron de la mano del avance de la ciencia y la tecnología.

Desde hace 35 años pasa sus días en el laboratorio donde con pasión y vocación hace su aporte a la salud, a la ciencia y la calidad de vida. Marta Sbodio es bioquímica directora técnica en la Clínica Regional del Este y en todo este tiempo vivió los avances tecnológicos en su profesión, capacitándose constantemente.
“Esta es una de las carreras duras, lleva muchos años de estudio, pero genera mucha satisfacción si a uno le gusta. La bioquímica es un continuo aprendizaje”, aseguró Marta. En el Día del Bioquímico –que se celebra cada 15 de junio en homenaje al nacimiento del Dr. Juan Antonio Sánchez, farmacéutico, doctor en Química y profesor de Química Analítica de Medicamentos-, LVSJ / Posta cuenta la historia de esta profesional que trabaja por el bienestar de todos como muchos bioquímicos y bioquímicas.
El desarrollo de la profesión bioquímica es cada vez más complejo e interesante en cuanto a ciencia y tecnología, todo eso requiere capacitación constante y también inversiones.
Mirando hacia atrás y todo lo que evolucionó su trabajo, Marta –quien también es tesorera en el Centro de Bioquímicos de San Francisco- contó que cuando comenzó a trabajar en el año 1989 “todas las técnicas eran manuales, lo más avanzado era eso, se hacía mucho menos de lo que hacemos actualmente. Éramos tres bioquímicos, una secretaria y una persona para la limpieza, todo eso era suficiente”.
“Con el tiempo, el aumento de la demanda por los avances en la ciencia y la tecnología, hoy ya tenemos cinco secretarias y somos ocho bioquímicas, algunas se manejan de manera autónoma porque están especializadas en distintos temas”, agregó.
“Se fue incorporando todo lo que la tecnología nos permitía incorporar. Cuando comencé no teníamos una computadora, los informes se hacían con una máquina de escribir, después llegó la primera computadora y actualmente ya tenemos doce, porque de otra manera no podríamos trabajar. Fue una evolución constante dentro del laboratorio”.
En cuanto a la tecnología y los nuevos aparatos que se utilizan para hacer los análisis, la profesional afirmó: “Contamos con autoanalizador, inclusive los trabajamos por duplicado ya que al estar en el interior del interior del país nos aseguramos de que siempre tenemos la posibilidad de brindar el servicio. Entonces no tenemos problemas y si un aparato necesita algún tipo de mantenimiento siempre va a haber uno de reemplazo. Todos los estudios de hematología o de medio interno lo tenemos siempre por duplicado para que el servicio tenga continuidad”.
Comentó que a lo largo del tiempo “se fue incorporando todo lo que la tecnología nos permitía incorporar. “Trabajamos los 365 días del año y las 24 horas del día con guardias porque la clínica creció, tiene muchos profesionales, brinda muchos servicios y es una referencia en la región. El laboratorio responde a esas necesidades”, dijo.
¿Por qué es importante la tecnología en el laboratorio?
Actualmente en el laboratorio todos los procesos se han automatizado con el aporte de la informática, generando una verdadera revolución en cuanto a la precisión y sensibilidad, pero también a la accesibilidad de los análisis y la rapidez en obtener los resultados. “Hoy se puede diagnosticar y controlar muchísimos procesos de salud-enfermedad en nuestra ciudad sin necesidad de trasladar al paciente. Y esto es así en todas las ramas de la medicina”.
La bioquímica explicó que las “técnicas de biología molecular, los anticuerpos monoclonales, los equipos automatizados que pueden procesar muestras simultáneamente y realizar múltiples análisis a cada una, forman parte de lo cotidiano para los bioquímicos que se desempeñan en el ámbito clínico”.
Aclaró: “No se debe prescindir de la intervención bioquímica en ninguno de los procesos, ya que su formación permite aceptar o rechazar procesos y resultados que deben ser, de modo imprescindible, observados por el profesional bioquímico. Las especialidades de Hematología y Bacteriología necesitan, imprescindiblemente, de un avezado bioquímico en la observación al microscopio”.
Contó que al comenzar a comprender la importancia de medir sustancias de los fluidos del cuerpo humano “se contaba solo con técnicas comparativas. Comparar el color de una muestra con distintos colores que correspondían a concentraciones de glucosa permitía evaluar al paciente respecto a una patología muy conocida como la diabetes”.
“Podrán imaginar la importancia de ver y contar los glóbulos rojos, los glóbulos blancos, en éste momento es muy reconocida la importancia de las plaquetas por los problemas que se observaron con el dengue. Todo se hacía de forma más artesanal, contando los elementos de la sangre en el microscopio. En determinados momentos se produjeron avances muy impactantes como utilizar isótopos radiactivos para poder medir hormonas con la técnica de Radioinmunoanálisis”, afirmó.

Realidad actual
La realidad impacta en esta profesión que necesita cada vez más recursos para su financiamiento. “El veloz y profundo desarrollo de los métodos de diagnóstico, seguimiento y tratamiento de los procesos de salud – enfermedad ameritan una atención más destacada del financiamiento que se debe prever para ello”, analizó Marta.
Explicó que respecto a la financiación de la salud en nuestro país “subsisten dos sistemas de atención a los pacientes: público, con hospitales y dispensarios o centros de atención y privado con financiamiento a través de Obras Sociales y Prepagas que reciben aportes de empleados y empleadores o aportes voluntarios según el caso”.
“Desde el aspecto de financiamiento privado es histórica la lucha por el reconocimiento de aranceles que permitan cubrir la demanda que las mismas obras sociales autorizan a sus afiliados. Las demoras de 60 a 90 días para abonar prestaciones constituyen una situación solo comprensible por el rédito económico de ventajas financieras y por supuesto la falta de actualización de aranceles ya es una constante. Actualmente las entidades financiadoras también cuentan con sistemas de autorización y auditoria en tiempo real que les permite controlar el consumo, desvíos de facturación o cualquier situación irregular que pudieran observar”, añadió.
Advirtió finalmente que dentro de este sistema “es fácil comprender que el paciente está cautivo de su obra social que no lo asiste en forma suficiente. El profesional de la salud, dentro de este contexto, luego de años de formación, con una carrera desarrollada en y para la comunidad, sin irse al extranjero, también es un rehén del sistema. La salud es un derecho humano, pero tiene costo”.
