Una prueba para la democracia norteamericana
La democracia estadounidense que ha sido ejemplo para el mundo entero durante más de dos siglos vive una dura prueba. Por un lado, quienes respetan el sistema y lo consolidan con sus acciones. Por el otro, los que piensan que la democracia está bien siempre y cuando haya mecanismos para mantener el poder. Y si no se puede conseguir lo que se pretende, hay que despreciar las reglas del sistema.
El diario The Washington Post difundió una grabación del presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, en la que le pide a un alto cargo electoral "encontrar" las papeletas de votos necesarias para anular su derrota en el estado de Georgia. El revuelo que provocó esta noticia todavía resuena en todos los círculos políticos de la potencia del norte y ha generado innumerables repercusiones en todo el mundo.
Días más tarde los acontecimientos se precipitaron. Luego de un flamígero discurso más propio de un dictador que del primer mandatario de la democracia más consolidada del planeta, una horda de fanáticos atacó el Congreso de los Estados Unidos. El hecho fue el culmen de una serie de sucesos que partieron de la intención de Trump de no reconocer su derrota electoral, algo que debió finalmente conceder a regañadientes luego de que los dramáticos episodios del Capitolio llegaron a su fin.
Antes de estas imágenes de "república bananera", como las calificó el ex presidente George Bush, Trump hizo todo lo posible para evitar el traspaso del mando. Hasta, indirectamente, envió a algunos fanáticos a profanar una de las instituciones centrales de la democracia norteamericana. Antes, buscó durante una larga conversación telefónica la ayuda de Brad Raffensperger, un congresista republicano encargado de las elecciones en Georgia. "No pasa nada por decir que volvieron a contar los votos", dijo el mandatario en una grabación, que fue realizada a escondidas y que fue difundida este domingo por el diario que destapó el caso Watergate hace medio siglo. Vale señalar que la victoria demócrata en Georgia había sido confirmada por un recuento y por auditorías con unos 12.000 sufragios de ventaja.
A partir de la difusión de la grabación, el escándalo -uno más- parece poner a prueba a la hasta ahora consolidada democracia norteamericana. Mucho más luego de lo acontecido mientras el Congreso se aprestaba a ratificar la victoria demócrata en las elecciones de noviembre pasado. Es que las acciones del actual presidente, su negativa férrea a reconocer la derrota en las elecciones de noviembre, los intentos por dar vuelta de cualquier modo el resultado electoral y su irresponsabilidad a la hora de hablar en público o enviar mensajes por las redes sociales instalaron condiciones que suponen una durísima prueba para el sistema democrático estadounidense.
Incluso mucho antes de los lamentables sucesos del Capitolio, ya se hablaba de una suerte de "golpe de Estado" legislativo, propiciado por algunos senadores que se separarían del bloque republicano para seguir casi con devoción a la figura del polémico Trump. La irrupción intempestiva de los fanáticos que destrozaron el edificio pareció confirmar la idea. Por otra parte, varias voces lo habían anticipado.
Es "incluso peor" que Watergate, dijo el periodista Carl Bernstein, uno de los autores de las revelaciones que derribaron a Richard Nixon. Mientras, en una columna muy dura publicada en The New York Times, el reconocido Thomas Friedman sostuvo que no era descabellada una maniobra sediciosa. Así, escribió, se estaría frente a una "minoría desacreditada e impotente de chiflados esperando el último tweet de Trump para decirles qué hacer, decir y creer".
De este modo, la democracia estadounidense que ha sido ejemplo para el mundo entero durante más de dos siglos vivió en las últimas horas y vivirá en las próximas semanas una dura prueba. Por un lado, quienes respetan el sistema y lo consolidan con sus acciones. Por el otro, como ocurre en muchos otros países, grupos que piensan que la democracia está bien siempre y cuando haya mecanismos para mantener el poder. Y si no se puede conseguir lo que se pretende, hay que despreciar las normas y las reglas del sistema. Porque en definitiva, solo se trata de seguir casi a ciegas la voluntad de alguien que pretende encaramarse como líder absoluto. Esta es la novedad que aparece en la política de la primera potencia mundial.
