“Ser médico es algo que llevamos puesto, tenemos la responsabilidad de dar salud”
En el Día del Médico, que se celebra hoy 3 de diciembre, la doctora Mónica Rodríguez reflexionó sobre los desafíos que implicó la pandemia para la medicina y para la sociedad en todo el mundo.
Ser médico es más que una profesión y eso quedó demostrado en casi dos años de pandemia de coronavirus con la entrega inmensa de los galenos en todo el mundo. Así también lo siente la doctora Mónica Rodríguez, epidemióloga de Arroyito y referente de Inmunología quien, con 47 años de intensa trayectoria, reafirmó su vocación durante esta crisis sanitaria.
En el Día del Médico, que se celebra hoy 3 de diciembre, Rodríguez reflexionó sobre los desafíos que implicó la pandemia para la medicina y para la sociedad en todo el mundo. Contó que al mismo tiempo que luchaban contra un virus desconocido, se iba aprendiendo sobre la marcha, también destacó la importancia de la vacunación como la medida para evitar más muertes e internaciones y advirtió que la pandemia "no terminó" por lo que hay que seguir con los cuidados.
"Creo que la medicina es algo que vino conmigo, una vocación, una parte de mi vida muy importante. La vocación de servicio tiene que ser nuestro eje principal, el ser médico es algo que llevamos puesto, tenemos la responsabilidad de dar salud. Siempre me gustó la medicina asistencial, el servicio a los demás", afirmó la doctora.
Con 66 años sigue trabajando en el Hospital "Dr. Carlos J. Rodríguez" a cargo de los servicios de Infectología, Inmunizaciones y Vigilancia Epidemiológica. También integra el Comité de Infectología de la Sociedad Argentina de Pediatría y trabaja en el Hospital de Niños de la Santísima Trinidad de la ciudad de Córdoba del que no se desvinculó desde sus comienzos.
Se recibió de médica en 1974 y llegó a Arroyito a comienzos de los '80, hizo la especialidad en Infectología y en 2009 comenzó la Maestría en Salud Pública de la UNC, además del curso de Epidemiología de la UNC. Estuvo diez años como directora del Hospital de Arroyito y también ocupó la Secretaría de Salud.
- ¿Cómo ve usted la medicina, qué
aprendizajes deja la pandemia?
La pandemia nos enseñó mucho desde el punto de vista personal y social, tuvimos muchos altibajos, emociones, sacrificios y muchos médicos nos dedicamos totalmente enfrentarla. También tuvimos pérdidas, como mucha gente, yo la sufrí en lo personal con la muerte de mi esposo Juan Carlos Calafell por covid.
Nos encontramos ante un virus que no conocíamos, fuimos aprendiendo sobre la marcha, "haciendo camino al andar" y amoldándonos a los cambios que teníamos que establecer para ir mejorando la situación, pero la pandemia todavía no terminó. Cuando comenzó la pandemia inmediatamente nos reunimos con un grupo de médicos de la parte pública y privada y empezamos la vigilancia epidemiológica, luego vinieron los hisopados. Los casos en Arroyito comenzaron haciendo brote, tiene la característica que es una ciudad muy comercial, fabril y también rural, hay mucho movimiento de personas y eso también llevó a que haya más casos, pero se hizo una vigilancia activa.
- ¿Alguna vez vivió una situación similar ejerciendo la medicina?
Viví la epidemia de H1N1 Gripe A en 2009 y el dengue pero no fue lo mismo, la Gripe A fue contrarrestada tempranamente, por eso la del coronavirus es la primera pandemia que me toca vivir.
- ¿Cuáles son los desafíos que se deben enfrentar?
Los médicos nos estamos adaptando a las nuevas circunstancias, despacito, tenemos otra visión, la pandemia nos enseñó mucho y creo que una de las cosas fundamentales es que tenemos que cuidarnos para cuidar a los otros, implementar correctamente las medidas de bioseguridad. También la pandemia nos sirvió para afirmar que el conocimiento hay que ponerlo en práctica y saber que esta pandemia no termina acá por lo que tenemos que seguir cuidándonos. Creo que también hay una nueva visión de la medicina frente a la sociedad.
- ¿Qué importancia tienen las vacunas en esta pandemia?
La vacuna es importante, hay que inmunizarse y hoy que tenemos más flexibilizaciones, es fundamental para prevenir, no sabemos qué pasará en esta pandemia, pero si seguimos vacunándonos y cuidándonos, será más leve. Todavía nos encontramos con gente que no cree en las vacunas y están equivocados porque el mundo puede dar testimonio que la vacuna es totalmente efectiva, una medida de prevención muy buena y acompañándola con las medidas de bioseguridad vamos a poder sostener esta pandemia con más altura. La Argentina va muy bien con la vacunación y gracias a las vacunas bajaron los índices de mortalidad e internación. Es importante para que resurja nuevamente la actividad económica y la libertad, porque los seres humanos somos libres, es innato y nos hace mal el encierro, por eso hay que aprender a valorar y respetar esa libertad. Tenemos que seguir mejorando, trabajando en equipo y con empatía hacia el otro, esta pandemia también nos enseñó que lo mejor es trabajar en equipo.
- ¿Qué balance puede hacer de la vacunación?
En Arroyito tenemos un índice de vacunación muy bueno, ya aplicamos más de 47 mil dosis. Trabajamos con grupos de vacunadores muy valiosos, recibimos el apoyo de la municipalidad y el Hospital pero el esfuerzo más grande fue el de las enfermeras porque logramos una continuidad en la vacunación desde que comenzó en febrero pasado. Desde el área de Inmunizaciones de la provincia recibimos un apoyo absoluto, Córdoba tuvo un equipo muy bueno a nivel central y también el departamento San Justo.
