Ómicron: precaución y calma se requieren
La declaración de la OMS encendió las alarmas en el mundo entero. La nueva mutación del virus genera todas las dudas posibles y demuestra que la pesadilla no ha concluido.
El insólito episodio que se vivió en Buenos Aires con la llegada de un crucero turístico al puerto proveniente de Cabo Verde, la confusión de los funcionarios de Prefectura y los intentos aclaratorios que confundieron aún más, dejaron al descubierto imprevisión e improvisación. Más aún porque el hecho ocurrió justamente cuando el mundo entero está recortando su comunicación con el continente africano, luego de la aparición allí de la variante del Covid 19 denominada ómicron.
Días antes de esta bizarra situación, los científicos de la Organización Mundial de la Salud designaron a la nueva mutación descubierta en el sur de África como "preocupante", la categoría más grave que contempla este organismo para las variantes del coronavirus. Esta designación, anunciada luego de una reunión de emergencia de la agencia de salud, se reserva para las variantes peligrosas que pueden propagarse con rapidez, causar daños importantes o reducir la efectividad de las vacunas o los tratamientos. La última variante del coronavirus en recibir esta denominación fue la delta, misma que apareció en el verano del hemisferio norte y que en nuestro país tiene circulación comunitaria pero no ha causado los estragos que provocó en Europa, por ejemplo.

Más allá del tono alarmista que parece caracterizar a la organización multilateral cada vez que tiene que informar novedades sobre la pandemia, la nueva mutación del virus genera todas las dudas posibles y demuestra que la pesadilla no ha concluido. Los interrogantes son similares a situaciones anteriores: ¿es realmente para preocuparse?, ¿se puede controlar con las medidas preventivas que ya se conocen?, ¿qué pasa con las vacunas, son eficientes o ahora son inservibles frente a esta variante?, ¿las restricciones de contacto con países de África son solo un modo de ganar tiempo?, ¿serán necesarias más dosis para estar inmunizados?
Según los expertos, la ómicron, muestra una gran cantidad de mutaciones genéticas que pueden facilitar su rápida propagación, incluso entre las personas vacunadas. La comunidad científica internacional coincide en que debe prestarse atención urgente a esta mutación del virus, aunque se deja en claro que deben hacerse muchos estudios para señalar que es realmente una amenaza muy seria o si su impacto no será importante.
La preocupación de la que habla la Organización Mundial de la Salud es una conducta natural frente a lo desconocido. Pero no sería la actitud adecuada pensar que ómicron es una especie de némesis del virus frente a los recursos médicos que lo combaten. De todos modos, sin caer en la alarma generalizada, se hace necesario tomar decisiones preventivas para adelantarse a los hechos y a las investigaciones científicas que darán las precisiones que se requieren.
Por ello, la prudencia siempre es buena consejera. Imaginar o anunciar el peor escenario sin pruebas contundentes genera desasosiego e inquietud. No obstante, es bueno reforzar las precauciones conocidas por todos y mantener la calma, entendiendo que la pandemia continuará dándonos sobresaltos.
