Nadal va por su 16º Grand Slam
El número uno del mundo buscará quedarse con el US Open cuando hoy enfrente en la final al sudafricano Anderson.
El español Rafael Nadal, número uno del tenis mundial, jugará hoy la final del US Open con la misión de capturar su 16º título de Grand Slam y consolidar el regreso a los primeros planos que había insinuado cuando conquistó Roland Garros, en una definición que lo presenta como claro favorito, ante un rival como Kevin Anderson, el primer sudafricano de la era abierta que irá por el título en Nueva York.
Nadal (1) y el sorprendente Anderson (32) jugarán la final hoy domingo a partir de las 17 (hora de la Argentina) en un partido que será televisado por la señal de cable Espn.
El español, dos veces campeón del US Open, en 2010 y 2013, recuperó en Nueva York la fiereza e intensidad de su juego, y esa típica determinación para llevarse a todos por delante, algo que había mostrado en su feudo, en la gira sobre polvo de ladrillo cuando alzó el trofeo en Montecarlo, el Conde de Godó de Barcelona, Madrid y Roland Garros por décima vez.
En el US Open, el mallorquín de 31 años eliminó sucesivamente al serbio Dusan Lajovic (85), el japonés Taro Daniel (121), el correntino Leo Mayer (59), el ucraniano Alexandr Dolgopolov (64), el ruso Andrey Rublev (53) y el tandilense Juan Martín Del Potro (28) en una semifinal en la que rindió de menor a mayor y ganó por 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 y 6-2.
En su historial con Anderson, el español está al frente por 4-0 tras haberlo vencido en Canadá 2010, Australia y París 2015, y este año en Barcelona.
Los números de "Rafa" son increíbles, con 23 finales de Grand Slam (ganó 15 títulos, puede quedar a tres del suizo Roger Federer) y además protagonizará su definición número 109 en un ATP, de las cuales ganó 73.
Por su parte, el sudafricano Anderson, un tenista de la misma generación que Nadal, nacido también en 1986, se instaló en la final tras haber superado al argentino nacionalizado estadounidense Juan Aragone (534); al letón Ernests Gulbis (255); al croata Borna Coric (61); el italiano Paolo Lorenzi (40); el estadounidense Sam Querrey (21) y al español Pablo Carreño Busta (19) en semifinales por 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 y 6-4.
Anderson, de una imponente altura de 2,03 metros, había cumplido su mejor actuación en el US Open en 2015 con su acceso a cuartos de final, y tiene tres títulos ATP en su carrera: Johannesburgo 2011, Delray Beach 2012 y Winston Salem 2015.
Stephens, la nueva reina
La estadounidense Sloane Stephens, número 83 del mundo, venció ayer a su compatriota Madison Keys (16) por un contundente 6-3 y 6-0 y se consagró campeona del US Open, cuarto y último Grand Slam de la temporada.
Stephens, de 24 años y oriunda de Florida, se impuso con autoridad para sellar un categórico triunfo que le permitió conquistar su primer título en un torneo "Major".
Luego de las victorias de la italiana Flavia Pennetta (ya retirada), en 2015, y de la alemana Angelique Kerber (6) el año pasado, una tenista estadounidense volvió a coronarse en casa como lo había hecho Serena Williams (15) en 2014.
"Debería retirarme ahora", dijo Stephens. "Nunca podré superar esto, hablar de un regreso, las cosas solo tienen que unirse y las últimas seis semanas fueron realmente grandiosas", añadió.
La originaria de Florida regresó en julio tras 11 meses alejada del tenis a causa de una fractura por estrés en el pie, que le hizo caer al lugar 957 del ranking mundial.
La nueva campeona, de 24 años de edad, es apenas la segunda mujer no sembrada que gana el US Open, desde que la belga Kim Clijsters lo hiciera al regresar de un retiro para ganar el trofeo en 2009.
"Es increíble. Me operaron el 23 de enero. Si me dijeran entonces que ganaría el Abierto de Estados Unidos diría que es imposible, absolutamente imposible", admitió.
