Los chicos y las noticias en pandemia: cuál es el rol de la familia
Las noticias sobre la pandemia pueden provocar en los chicos preocupación porque sus abuelos, familiares o amigos se enfermen. El análisis y los consejos de la psicopedagoga Daiana Ferreyra.

En un mundo atravesado por la tecnología y la información, los chicos ven, leen y escuchan noticias casi todo el tiempo a través de internet, la tele y la radio. Es bueno que puedan informarse sobre la realidad social local y mundial porque pueden ampliar sus conocimientos de los hechos cotidianos positivos, como noticias que hablen de solidaridad y buenos valores, temas comunes como deportes y entretenimiento, etc.
Pero cuando se informan hechos desafortunados, como delitos, violencia, catástrofes naturales y especialmente en esta época de pandemia con noticias sobre la amenaza del coronavirus, el contenido puede ser perturbador para los más chicos.
Este tipo de información puede provocarles angustia, ansiedad y temores. En esos momentos pueden surgir preguntas como: ¿Qué pasó mamá?, ¿Por qué el señor dice que ese chico se murió atropellado?, ¿Por qué no podemos salir?. En ese momento es importante que los padres o adultos les den una respuesta, pero, ¿cómo y qué contestarles?.
¿Hay que decir la verdad?, ¿Hasta dónde explicar?, ¿Conviene inventar una historia y apagar la tele?. "Es de suma importancia que la familia comparta el momento de las noticias con los niños, con el fin de poder 'traducirles' la información de manera adecuada con un lenguaje apropiado a su edad, que les permita comprenderla y al mismo tiempo, le genere seguridad y confianza", aseguró en diálogo con LA VOZ DE SAN JUSTO la licenciada en Psicopedagogía, Daiana Ferreyra (MP-12-4815).
Remarcó que en este caso es recomendable tener en cuenta ciertos aspectos. "No se debe saturar a los niños con las noticias, pero tampoco se las debe ocultar o negarlas, lo que se puede sugerir es ser selectivos con la información y comunicarles solo sobre las noticias que se consideran principales y que no generen un impacto negativo en ellos", explicó.
Evitar el miedo en pandemia
Las noticias sobre la pandemia pueden provocar en los chicos preocupación porque sus abuelos, familiares o amigos se enfermen. Con respecto a las noticias sobre la pandemia, la psicopedagoga aconsejó que es "importante que el niño no esté expuesto todo el día a escuchar y ver esta información. Como esto muchas veces ocurre, es importante que se respondan las preguntas sobre la pandemia de manera simple y honesta. Hablar con los niños sobre cualquier noticia que los haya atemorizado".
Agregó que siempre "hay que recordarles que cumpliendo las medidas de seguridad, como lavarse las manos, usar mascarillas y quedarse más en casa puede ayudar a que la familia se mantenga sana. Además, las visitas con distancia física que sean seguras y videollamadas a los abuelos o familiares pueden ayudar a aliviar la ansiedad y el temor".
Resaltó que es preferible "mostrarles noticias positivas sobre la crisis del coronavirus como por ejemplo aquellas relacionadas a la vacuna y explicarles que los científicos están trabajando muchísimo para descubrir cómo ayudar a las personas que se enferman y que las cosas van a mejorar".
Contener y tranquilizar
Cuando el niño vio alguna noticia dramática es importante que la familia le pregunte sobre lo que entendió al respecto y si tiene alguna consulta, independientemente de su edad o la etapa de desarrollo, afirmó Ferreyra.
"Es importante facilitarles información real y tranquilizadora para ayudarles a aliviar sus miedos -remarcó la profesional-. No hace falta explicarlo todo, aunque tampoco hay que intentar engañarlos ni inventar historias. Hay que preguntarles qué les preocupa y así centrar y sintetizar el tema. Esto permite disminuir el efecto negativo potencial de las noticias y además, estimula su pensamiento para que ellos discutan sus propias ideas y valores".
En el caso de que la noticia haya provocado enojo, triste o miedo en el niño se sugiere que el adulto lo pueda acompañar y contener. Aclaró que la contención "no tiene que ser precisamente una conversación, sino que puede ser un abrazo, cocinarle algo rico, ver una película juntos. Lo importante es que el niño sepa que los adultos están ahí a su lado para protegerlo y acompañarlo".

Brindar herramientas y seguridad
"Hay que permitirles a los niños expresarse, con confianza. Preguntarles qué saben sobre el tema y cómo se sienten al respecto. Generarle la seguridad de que van a estar allí para ayudarlo a mantenerse seguro, utilizando palabras sencillas y afecto", afirmó.
La psicopedagoga resaltó que es fundamental "apoyar a los niños en la educación de medios de comunicación. Brindarles herramientas para que puedan desarrollar la capacidad de no creer todo lo que ven y leen sino también, dudar y juzgar el valor de la información".
"Además, como la fuente número uno en la que los niños confían son los adultos que los rodean -indicó-, es importante dar el ejemplo en cuanto al consumo de noticias, motivarlos a pensar de forma crítica acerca de las fuentes y debatir las noticias con ellos".

Además, las visitas con distancia física que sean seguras y videollamadas a los abuelos o familiares pueden ayudar a aliviar la ansiedad y el temor", Ferreyra.
Controlar tiempo frente a las pantallas
Estar expuestos a ver constantemente actos violentos por televisión o las redes sociales puede llevar a que lo niños imiten dicha conducta o sentir que el mundo les asusta y que algo malo les puede suceder.
La psicopedagoga advirtió que la exposición a la violencia "puede ir seguida de problemas de comportamiento como berrinches, inestabilidad emocional, miedos, conducta demandante o desafiante, pesadillas y dificultades para dormir".
"Por eso es tan importante que los adultos controlen el tiempo que sus hijos pasan delante de las pantallas y establezcan límites para asegurarse de que no están pasando demasiado tiempo frente a ellas. Es recomendable establecer límites saludables al tiempo de exposición a pantallas y estar bien informados sobre qué está viendo o a que está jugando el niño. Los medios no deben quitarles horas necesarias de sueño ni de actividad física", manifestó.
La psicopedagoga aclaró que es recomendable que los niños más pequeños hasta de 5 y 6 años de edad "reciban la información de uno de los padres o adultos encargados de su cuidado en lugar de recibirla de los medios de comunicación, ya que suelen ir acompañadas de imágenes que puede impactar negativamente en ellos".
"Si son niños más grandes, es importante estar presente para explicarles y guiarlos para que no pueda afectarlos. Es mejor comunicar sólo la información básica y evitar las imágenes, videos o los detalles que no sean necesarios especialmente de los hechos trágicos", finalizó.
